As a volunteer for the Safety Net Youth Mentoring Program I agree:
- To maintain appropriate adult behavior at all times.
- To expect less than age-appropriate behavior from the youth.
- To exhibit behavior that is respectful and assumes equality toward members of
all sexes, ethnic/racial and religious groups, and to avoid comments that can
be construed as racist, sexist, or bigoted.
- To avoid any inappropriate materials or activities of any kind, including those
which are sexually explicit or dangerous.
- To accept supervision by the program director in order to improve my volunteer
service.
- To inform the program director immediately of any major crisis or changes in
the youth's life, as well as in my own.
- To inform the program director of a change of address, telephone number, or e-mail
address.
- To notify the program director of any extended leave, resignation, or a desire
to change assignments.
- To report on each mentoring contact. Reports will be sent within the week, by
e-mail or a mentor form through the mail. Information should detail the frequency,
length, and nature of the activities.
- To treat the youth's parent(s)/guardian(s) with respect, and avoid criticism
or negative comments about them to, or in front of, the child.
- To keep relationships with youth's parents on a professional level.
- To set reasonable limits for the youth and not violate rules set by the youth's
parent(s) or by the program.
- To plan activities which are compatible with the youth's other appropriate relationships
and activities.
- To maintain the youth's curfew, and always return him to his own home at the
end of an activity.
- To respect the rights and wishes of the youth, and never use shame or coersion
to get him to participate in activities favored by the volunteer.
- To avoid indulging the youth with extravagant gifts, money, food, or outings.
- To attend in-service training sessions and group meetings, and advise the program
director ahead of time if I will not be able to attend.
- To choose appropriate, positive activities. (When in doubt, choose a different
activity, or contact the program director).
